This module provides the physics fundamentals needed to understand forces, motion, energy, fluids and heat in aircraft engineering. It forms the basis for correctly interpreting technical relationships in aircraft systems and components.
Topics
- Matter: elements; atoms/molecules; compounds; states of matter and phase changes
- Mechanics: Statics (forces/moments, centre of gravity, stress/strain/elasticity, pressure/buoyancy) Kinetics (linear/rotational motion, vibration/resonance) Dynamics (work/power/energy, momentum, gyroscopic principles, friction) Fluid dynamics (density, viscosity, compressibility, Bernoulli/Venturi)
- Thermodynamics: temperature/scales, heat, specific heat capacity, heat transfer, 1st/2nd law, ideal gas laws, isothermal/adiabatic processes, cycles
- Optics as well as waves & sound (including Doppler effect)
